Japan

I was lucky enough to spend three months in Singapore over the (wet) summer of 2010 with a short-term transfer with work. I made the most of the opportunity of being out East by spending several long weekends away around South-East Asia, and at the end, 10 days in Japan.

I've always fancied Japan, and cutting down the time zones I needed to cross would help me settle in and understand the culture shock - Singapore is comparatively very Western! I started in Tokyo and, using the fantastic rail system, travelled across country to Kyoto via the Japanese Alps. Then it was back to Tokyo using the Bullet Train - the Shinkansen.

On my way I saw amazing temples and shrines, mountains, rivers and small towns. I passed by Mt Fuji, in and out of the cloud. I ate sashimi at Tokyo Fish Market, and pancakes and sake in Takayama.

I'd certainly recommend Japan; the locals are extremely friendly and accommodating, the food amazing and the sights to die for.
